What is Embroidery
Custom Embroidery is a decorative embellishment, usually on fabric, created with a needle and thread, usually on a computer controlled sewing machine, that depicts a graphic and/or descriptive text.

A custom embroidery design is generally several thousand stitches using several different colors of thread. Although the actual sewing of the embroidery process is usually computer controlled, the art of creating the pattern, call “digitizing” will ultimately determine the end quality of the embroidery.

A customer embroidery design is usually designed from one of the following sources:
  • Graphic or logo (may include text)
  • Existing stock design (may have text added)
  • Text only

    About Embroidery Designs

Embroidery designs are generally derived from one or more of three sources:
  • Custom graphic
  • Stock design
  • Text design

    Custom graphic
If you have a logo or other graphic you like, this probably is the best option for you. Send us a copy of the graphic for evaluation via email (jpg, jpeg, bmp, gif) (we prefer jpg) and we’ll let you know how it will turn out in embroidery. Text can be added to most any graphic.

    Stock Design
If you don’t have a logo but want to add a graphic element to your design, choose from our stock design library that includes well over 20,000 embroidery designs (not for sale). We’ll add text to personalize the design especially for you. (www.dakotacollectibles.com)

    Text design
If you only want your design to consist of text clearly embroidered on your product then that’s no problem either. We have stock alphabets (fonts) to choose from. If you have a custom font, we can most likely render it in embroidery as well.

    Embroidery Digitizing

  • Digitizing an embroidery pattern is the process of creating a set of instructions that a computer controlled sewing machine (embroidery machine) used to sew an intricate pattern of stitches that renders text and/or graphics into a sewn decoration, usually applied to fabric. Digitizing software is used to facilitate this process. A digitizer is the person who uses the software and determines the order that each element is sewn and using what type of stitches. As part of the evaluation of your design, we will make a stitch count estimate. This estimate will be included in the email you receive as confirmation of your file upload. If you would like to minimize stitch count charges, we will be happy to work with you to develop a design that is less stitch-intensive.

    Importance of Digitizing
Preparation of the embroidery pattern (“digitizing”) requires an understanding of the different types of stitches and fabrics and how they work together.

    Embroidery Guidelines

For a typical left chest embroidery, the ideal design has a maximum dimension of 3.5” - 4.0”. There are exceptions when a design has one dimension that is several times larger than the other. The size of many designs is dictated by the smallest text in the design. We will size your design appropriately based on our experience.

The smallest text we can embroider with any accuracy is about 0.20” (5mm) high. We can make adjustments to your design to compensate for slight variations. Typically, a single line of text can only include about 20 characters and spaces before it requires the text to be split into two lines.

The maximum height for a headwear design is 2.25” high (1.50” for visors). The width may be as wide as 5” or even more.

    Proofing
After a design is created, we proof each one to make sure what looks good on screen really works out as well once it’s sewn on fabric. Any edits that are needed are performed and the design is re-sewn to make sure the changes produced the desired result.

    Approval
Once the design meets our standards, we send you a copy by email for your approval. Only after your approval is your order moved to production.
